Our Story

The concept of the Cape Verdean Association was born in 1990, when the Founding Board purchased the historic Strand Theatre, with a vision of creating a home for Cape Verdean culture. This boarded-up building in deplorable condition after a fire inspired them to create a home for Cape Verdeans here and at home, on the islands They set to work with zeal, rebuilt the roof, secured the building, and cleaned the interior. The non-profit CV Association in NB was incorporated in 1995. After 20 plus years and steady work by volunteers and board members, work continues with grants from the city, private benefactors, and fundraising activities to rehabilitate the building and create the Cape Verdean Cultural Community Center.
