Opening the Cultural Center and Creating Island Park

The Board of Directors and its partners are focused on opening a Cultural Community Center for performances, art events, and education. The completed restoration of the state historic Strand theatre into the Cape Verdean Cultural Center, and the creation of Island Park as a green space for youth programming in the adjacent lot will provide a home for Cape Verdean culture and a
physical space for performances, artists, and social gatherings.

Programs for the Community

CVA-NB sees cultural programming as a way to bring the community together in the learning and sharing of our culture. The center will provide musical performances and theater, education, arts, and cultural programs for youth and adults in the community. Establishing a Cape Verdean Consulate Office in New Bedford is part of the long-term strategy.

“Always bear in mind that the people are not fighting for ideas, for the things in anyone’s head. They are fighting to win material benefits, to live better and in peace, to see their lives go forward, to guarantee the future of their children. . .”
