OUR STORY

OUR MISSION

To preserve and promote Cape Verdean Culture.

As the vanguard of Cape Verdean heritage in the United States, we aspire to
reach, build, and strengthen partnerships throughout the Diaspora. The
CVANB will foster continued appreciation for our history, deliver culturally
competent programs and services that enrich all communities, making a
difference in the lives of the Cape Verdean people here and abroad.

TIMELINE

THIS
IS
OUR HISTORY.

The vision of a home for Cape Verdean people and their culture took shape in 1990 when a group of determined dedicated hard-working men and women purchased the abandoned Strand theater on Acushnet Avenue in the north end. In 1995 the Founding board incorporated a nonprofit Cape Verdean Association in New Bedford they set to work with zeal to secure the building, rebuild the roof and clean the boarded-up interior after a fire in deplorable condition. After 20-plus years and steady work by volunteers and board members, work continues with grants from the city, private benefactors, and fundraising activities to rehabilitate the building and create the Cape Verdean Cultural Community Center.
