Island Park
A public green space dedicated to celebrating island cultures.
Our Mission for the Island Park
Island Park is envisioned as a vibrant, community-centered destination where neighbors can connect, unwind, and enjoy the outdoors. The park blends open green spaces with thoughtfully curated gardens, creating both lively and tranquil areas that appeal to all ages. Dedicated social zones encourage gatherings, events, and casual meet-ups, while quieter nooks offer opportunities for reflection, reading, or peaceful strolls.
Designed with beauty and comfort in mind, Island Park features inviting pathways, native and exotic plantings, and visually appealing landscapes that change with the seasons. Accessibility is a central priority—its layout ensures that all visitors can easily navigate the park’s features, whether arriving on foot or with mobility aids. As a whole, Island Park provides a welcoming, inclusive, and aesthetically pleasing environment that strengthens neighborhood connections and enhances daily life.
History of Island Park
Island Park began with a community opportunity. In 2019, CVA-NB learned that the lot next to its building was available for purchase. After careful assessment and a successful fundraising effort, the organization acquired the property with a vision of transforming it into a welcoming public greenspace. This new area would not only complement CVA-NB’s mission but also provide additional room for community events, family programs, and outdoor engagement.
To bring this vision to life, CVA-NB partnered with WHALE and Studio 2 Sustain, assembling a dedicated volunteer committee from across the city. Together, they guided the planning process, oversaw fundraising, and coordinated construction efforts. A feasibility study informed the early concepts, and a landscape architect was engaged to shape a functional, accessible, and appealing design.
The resulting plan introduced features that encourage connection and play—comfortable seating for games and social interaction, and a family-friendly playscape at the heart of the park.
A key moment in the park’s transformation was the installation of a vibrant mural by local artist Eden Soares. This artwork became the first visible sign of what Island Park would become: a lively, creative, and meaningful space for the entire neighborhood.
